The Canadian International School of Hong Kong is looking for an IT Systems Engineer .
Reporting to the Senior Manager of IT Systems and Security, the Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting all operational requirements of the school’s network and helping manage the existing network, ensuring the overall integrity of data, security, and infrastructure in all areas of information technologies, including networking, systems, wireless networks, and telecommunications (voice and data). The position will work collaboratively with the IT Systems and Security team to uphold the tech mission of ubiquitous access to the data network for students, faculty, and staff. S/he will also need to perform other duties as required.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
IT Infrastructure and Systems
Serve as the primary system engineer to manage, maintain and troubleshoot the internal and cloud server systems, IT security services, backup infrastructure, storage area network, infrastructure services and protocols (LDAP, SSL, SSH, DNS, Active Directory, Entra/AAD) and virtual server environment.
Work with the IT Service Desk team to support the user account creation process.
Deploy and manage software and systems in physical and virtualized environments.
Maintain day-to-day operation of the School’s backup infrastructure and responds to requests to restore data.
Hardware and Software Support
Ensure that help desk tickets for hardware and software are resolved in a timely manner.
Responsible for administering the day-to-day operations of the campus-wide Cloud-based and internal systems which include Linux, VMware vSphere, Windows, Cloud-based systems, system backups, and integration of server systems in a team environment.
Research, Best Practices and Training
Collaborate with the IT Systems and Security team to research, tests, and recommend tools and utilities that may improve or enhance server security, performance, server reliability, and user support. With the IT Systems and Security team, develop and/or recommend standards and improved procedures for technical initiatives and workflow, including analyzing infrastructure impacts.
Equipment Maintenance, Inventory Control, and Documentation
Monitor and fine-tune server and SAN utilization and performance data; review and analyze data to increase infrastructure integrity and efficiency; forecast and recommend improvements based on operational reports.
With the IT Systems and Security team, develop documents and maintain a library of all aspects of the server environment for future additions, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Manages Server Room operations
Monitors HVAC operation.
Monitors and manages maintenance for UPS systems.
Monitors and manages maintenance for fire suppression systems.
Ensures alarms are working properly.
Provisions and de-provisions servers, firewalls, SAN, and associated network equipment.
Other Duties As Required
Take an active role in your own development and work towards gaining
industry-recognized certifications in the core products used by CDNIS in addition to developing other technical and interpersonal skills.
Undertake any other duties and functions as required, which will help impact and strengthen the contributions of the division and improve overall operations.
Experience and Qualifications
Education/Skills
University graduate, Computer Science or Computer Engineering graduate preferable
One or more Microsoft certifications, such as MCSA or MCSE, desired
Certification in information security, PMP or ITIL is an advantage
Knowledge of server and operating system technologies, particularly Windows
Familiarity with at least one Linux operating system variant preferred
Knowledge of SAN technologies
Knowledge of network and server monitoring technologies
Experience managing backup solutions
Experience
At least three years of relevant system administration with experience deploying and managing software and systems in both a physical and virtualized environment or an equivalent combination of education and work experience is required.
Working knowledge of LAN/WAN routing protocols, DNS, DHCP, web filtering, proxy services
Experience in working in an LDAP and Active Directory environment
Experience in supporting Apple and Microsoft products (eg. Apple iOS, Apple TV, Apple software, Windows OS, etc.)
Experience in supporting Google Apps (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Drive, etc.)
Experience in supporting VMWare VSphere VCenter administration is an advantage
Experience in configuring switches (Cisco, Juniper, Aruba, etc.) is an advantage
Experience with Microsoft Azure and Office 365 highly desired
Personal Skills/Qualities
Fluency in English, Cantonese and Mandarin is preferred but not essential
Good problem solving skills on network, hardware and software, maintenance, repair, and recovery
Good interpersonal and communication skills
Good at project planning and time management
Ability to work independently and with a team, with minimum supervision
Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and oversee the work of vendors
Skilled at establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with administrators, faculty and staff; customer service focus
Willing to work with and support our students and learning community
Willing to work outside office hours when required, especially during busy periods
Ability to handle confidential files and information in a professional manner
Intellectual flexibility, technical curiosity and a sense of humor, including the ability to learn independently
